She describes her childhood as defined by abuse and poverty, but she remained close to her mother, who encouraged and shared her interest in horror, the paranormal and science fiction. The fourth child in a family of five children, her parents, Harold and Malene Woodward, divorced when she was eight, at which point she lived with her grandparents. It was breathtaking, even in the damn mirror. It was the perfect timing when three of God’s creations collided: the sun, trees, and water. It wasn’t the deep blue shade of the ocean past the reflection of the tree line, or the white when the foam gathered in the sand, but the sweet spot in the middle. It was the color of the reflection of palm trees across a shoreline when the sun was at its highest point in the day. A color so distinguishable, but indescribable at the same time. It was in that moment I noticed his green eyes. When he turned back around, he approached the sink beside mine. He switched the water on in the stall next to mine and hung his clothes and towel. He drew nearer before he appeared in the mirror’s reflection behind me, and leaned over to grab a towel off the shelf, careful to keep a distance, but also lingering longer than he should. Once it dawned on me how long we’re standing there for, I faced the mirror again and flipped on the faucet to brush my teeth. I returned a smile, but it was only because his was contagious-nothing more. Then, a sleepy smile greeted me before his voice did. His face held no expression as he stared at me from about five feet away. After he dropped his hand from his face and he noticed me, he stopped walking. You have a few interlocking paths moving forward in The Toll, including two elderly women and their adopted son, a man running the local bar without much memory of his past, and a young man in search of his new wife. There were several intriguing characters and backstories to be found, and a mystery that held my attention up until the final fifty pages or so. Over the course of a week, I read The Toll in the midst of a five or six other titles.įor the most part, I really enjoyed the story. The writing worked for me, and the brief synopsis got my attention enough that I decided to take out a loan on the book. Then, quite at random (as I’ve been with books this first month of the new year), I spotted The Toll in my library and read its opening chapter. As far as the readers I generally trust, I didn’t have much hope in The Toll judging by their experiences with the book, so I ignored its release. Last year, I saw this title a lot – people seemed either very disappointed by it, or loved it. The Moonstone is a text that grows imaginatively out of the secrets that the unconventional Collins was obliged to keep as he wrote the novel. Entranced with double lives, with men and women who only know part of the story, Collins weaves their narratives into a web of suspense. Collins's novel of addictions is itself addictive, moving through a sequence of startling revelations towards the final disclosure of the truth. One of the great triumphs of nineteenth-century sensation fiction, The Moonstone tells of a mystery that for page after page becomes more, not less inexplicable. Who took it? And where is it now? A dramatist as well as a novelist, Wilkie Collins gives to each of his narratorsa household servant, a detective, a lawyer, a cloth-eared Evangelical, a dying medical manvibrant identities as they separately tell the part of the story that concerns themselves. Probably the very finest detective story ever written. Who, in the name of wonder, had taken the Moonstone out of Miss Rachel's drawer?Ī celebrated Indian yellow diamond is first stolen from India, then vanishes from a Yorkshire country house. The Moonstone is the first, the longest and the best of modern English detective novels. Oxford Research Encyclopedias: Global Public Health.
